Two ways to automate a mobile app, and we use both
The right approach depends on what we're testing against, not personal preference. Here's when we reach for each.
Native (Espresso / XCUITest)
Fastest and most reliable, when we have the app's source.
- Espresso drives Android from inside the app under test, so it stays in sync with the UI thread automatically, no manual waits and no flaky sleeps.
- XCUITest does the same on iOS, built into Xcode and running against the real accessibility tree the app exposes.
- Both need access to the codebase and a build we can run tests against, so this is the default when the app is our client's own or we're embedded with the dev team.
Cross-platform (Appium + WebdriverIO)
One suite, both platforms, no source access required.
- Appium drives the compiled app through the WebDriver protocol, the same approach we use for browser automation, so it works against a build without needing the project's codebase.
- We script it with WebdriverIO, the framework we already run for web testing, so one team and one skillset cover web, iOS, and Android.
- It's the right call for a pre-release check on a build we didn't write, or when a single suite needs to cover Android and iOS without maintaining two.
Most engagements end up using both: native for the deep regression suite embedded engineers maintain, Appium for the platform-spanning smoke tests that run on every build.

We test on a mix of real devices and emulators/simulators. Real-device testing catches hardware and interaction issues that emulators miss, while emulators and simulators help us cover a wide range of OS versions efficiently.
Which mobile automation frameworks do you use?
We use Espresso for native Android automation and XCUITest for native iOS automation when we have access to the app's source, since both run fastest and stay in sync with the UI automatically. For cross-platform coverage, or when we're testing a build without source access, we automate with Appium through WebdriverIO, the same framework we already run for web testing.
